Teacher Professional Development Course

Project (1) Integrated English Language Programme (IELP) (Key Stage1)
Initiated in 2000, IELP has reached 125 Hong Kong primary schools, trained 982 teachers, and benefited more than 109,650 students in Hong Kong. IELP is based on the well-researched best practices in English Language teaching and has been developed for Primary 1-3 levels. Big storybooks, language activities, songs, and games are all used in the programme. Major techniques taught in IELP include the Shared Book Approach, Writing Process, and Learning Centre Activities.

Project (2) ‘Learning to Learn’ English Language Project (LLELP) (Key Stage 2)
The success of the IELP paved the way for a new programme, LLELP, to meet the language learning needs in upper primary levels. Since its inception in 2003, 440 teachers from 45 primary schools have participated in LLELP and has been able to benefit 34,050 students. LLELP focuses on developing students’ skills of ‘learning to learn’ and independent learning through the key components of Guided Reading, K-W-L, and Retelling. Different genres, tasks, activities, and games are utilized in this programme to benefit participants.

In addition to the core IELP and / or LLELP programmes and services (advisory visits, professional development workshops, and resource materials), support services are offered to our project schools. The extra support services include an online resource bank and parent educational workshops. Our teacher educators provide practical tips for parents to enhance their children’s learning ability and introduce effective ways in learning English in the parent workshops.

IELP and LLELP enable children to learn English in a pleasurable way and in an enjoyable environment. The programmes are well acknowledged by parents, teachers, and principals alike. A six-year longitudinal study has also shown improvements in student learning, attitudes, and motivation. The results of the study show that the project students are:

  • Motivated to participate in class – to speak, to listen, to read and write
  • Strong in writing
  • Better at reading, even on previously unseen texts
  • Better in oral language
  • Better in grasping letter-sound relationships (phonics)
  • Generally better on national (e.g. TSA) type tests
